چکیده

Cavitation is harmful to water turbines and may cause operation delays of several weeks. The real-time detection of cavitation risk is increasingly important, and even narrow cavitation-free power ranges can be utilised in load optimisation. Higher derivative signals x and x calculated from acceleration signals are very suitable for detecting impacts. This paper introduces a generalised moment σM p α which is defined by three parameters: the sensitivity of the moment improves when the order p of the moment increases, especially when short sample time τ is used. In this study, sufficently good results were obtained with moments where the order of derivation α = 4, p ≈ 4, and τ = 3 s. These moments detect the normal operating conditions, which are free of cavitation, and also provide a clear indication for cavitation risk at an early stage. Sufficiently long signals are required for producing reliable maximum moments and data for analysing short-term cavitation. On-line cavitation monitoring is feasible with this approach since the analysis does not need high frequency ranges and the sample times are very short. The moment can be analysed first, and it is then possible to obtain the cavitation index if the moment value exceeds the threshold. Data compression is very efficient as the detailed analysis only requires the feature values of the appropriate samples.

Tiny bubbles challenge giant turbines: Three Gorges puzzle.

Since the birth of the first prototype of the modern reaction turbine, cavitation as conjectured by Euler in 1754 always presents as a challenge. Following his theory, the evolution of modern reaction (Francis and Kaplan) turbines has been completed by adding the final piece of the element 'draft-tube' that enables turbines to explore water energy at efficiencies of almost 100%. However, during...

Cavitation Inception in Crossflow Hydro Turbines

Cavitation is a common flow phenomena in most hydraulic turbines and has the potential to cause vibration, blade surface damage and performance loss. Despite the fact that crossflow turbines have been used in small-scale hydropower systems for a long time, cavitation has not been studied in these turbines. In this paper, we present the findings of a computational study on cavitation inception i...

Detecting Cavitation in a Vertical Sea water Centrifugal Lift Pump Related to Iran Oil Industry Cooling Water Circulation System

Cavitation is one of the most well-known process faults that may occur in different industrial equipment especially centrifugal pumps. Cavitation also may happen in water pumps and turbines. Sometimes cavitation has been severe enough to wear holes in the impeller and damage the vanes to such a degree that the impeller becomes very ineffective. More commonly, the pump efficiency will decrease s...
